They don’t call it the race that stops a nation for nothing. The Melbourne Cup frequently boasts more twists and turns than a soap opera, what with its AU$3M prize money, last year’s surprise female winner and riders from all over the world (including the first ever American horse participant).
This year’s Spring Race is set to be another unmissable event. But with the threat of poor weather and expected crowds we don’t blame you for wanting to give the carnival festivities a miss. - Dress For Success: Depending on the playfulness of the crowd, dressing the part for a Cup themed Party can involve going all out with costumes or normal clothes. Just let your guests know so you don’t end up with half in top hats and riding crops and the other half in shorts and thongs.
- Be Prepared: There are two things that always end up running out at any event: Ice and booze – the latter of which will be sorely needed amongst the betting members of the crowd. Make sure you have enough (with freezer space to store them) or you’ll have to abandon your hosting to head out to the shops and miss all the action.
- Prepare For Viewing: This might sound like a no brainer, but make sure you have a decent enough screen and screening room for viewing that allows everyone to see a blow by blow account of who’s in the lead.
- And Don’t Forget The Food: All that drinking and shouting at the TV is bound to build up an appetite. The goal here is to serve food that can be consumed without diverting attention away from viewing – so hearty finger food is a must!
